Regular mindfulness practice can help us ‘step back’ from situations and act with clarity, wisdom and perspective, rather than simply reacting in the heat of the moment. We are more able to focus on solutions rather than problems and to manage conflict and stress more effectively. This enables us to think and act with more awareness rather than just functioning and getting by. The positive effects of mindfulness are grounded not only in spiritual tradition, but in scientific fact. Whilst rooted in Buddhist philosophy, the practice of mindfulness is not dependent on a religious belief system. It is increasingly recognised in western psychology as an effective way of reducing stress and enhancing focus, self-awareness and emotional well-being; Mindfulness in Education is a growing movement in the UK. http://www.dharmaschool.co.uk/mindfulness-in-education/
Mindfulness is a psychological technique evidenced to help combat stress but it isn’t just for adults. Now more than ever, the spread of mindfulness in schools is having some amazing effects. An increasing number of teachers are looking to try Mindfulness in their classrooms & some are even partaking themselves due to the high levels of stress connected to their profession. Julie Kelly is a highly qualified & experienced Mindfulness practitioner and alongside her classes supported by Dr Michael Taylor of the York House Medical Practice in Heywood, Julie recently worked with a group of students from a local Academy School around stress reduction. This has subsequently led to her planning and facilitating short courses in Mindfulness & Meditation around other schools & Higher Education facilities. The concept of Mindfulness in the classroom, isn’t only about reducing stress levels amongst students, but also breaking down any barriers between teacher & student. The course runs 1 day per week for 6 weeks & is aimed at helping students experience the benefits of bringing the mind into the present moment alongside learning the skills to take into future life projects. The total cost of the course will be £120 for the whole 6 weeks.
The learning components of the course are as follows:
- What is Mindfulness?
